Dorothy Peterson McLendon March 01, 2010

Dorothy Peterson McLendon, age 79, of Burgaw died peacefully on Monday, March 1, 2010 at Huntington Health Care of Burgaw.

She was born September 15, 1930 in Sampson County to Hanson and Mary Bell Newkirk Peterson. Also remembered are her siblings, Clara Justice, Elbert Peterson and Norwood Peterson.

Dorothy is survived by her devoted husband of 39 years, Evander “Mac” McLendon III; her children, Keith Corbett of Maryland, Cathy Corbett and Terry “Mike” Corbett (Kathy) both of Turkey; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; brother, Horace Peterson of Clinton; and special niece, Martha Register.

Mrs. McLendon, fondly called Dot, was retired from DuPont after working many years. She was a member of Pike Rocky Point Presbyterian Church.

Dot was a devoted wife and loved all of her family dearly. Being outdoors, working in her yard, flowers and vegetable garden were activities most enjoyed by Dot. It has been reported that one summer she picked 75 bushels of butterbeans … what a farmer of God’s earth she was. Not only did she grow vegetables, but she was an exceptional cook. She was a lady of strong faith that carried her through an extended illness with grace and courage. Cherished memories of Dot will forever remain in our hearts.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with The Rev. J. C. Young-Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Pike Creek Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Kenny Wayne McLendon, Charlie Mac McLendon, Bob McLendon, David Hutcheson, Joey Hutcheson, and David McLendon, Jr.

The family will receive friends 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home on Thursday, one hour prior to the funeral service.

With heartfelt appreciation Dorothy’s family would like to thank Dr. Naseem Nasrallah and the staff of Huntington Health Care for the excellent and compassionate care given to Dot for the past six years.

Memorial gifts may be given to Pike Creek Cemetery Fund, C/O Pike Rocky Point Presbyterian Church, 7450 US Hwy 117 S, Rocky Point, NC 28457.
