Hayes Eugene DeVane March 08, 2010

Hayes Eugene DeVane, age 93, of Ivanhoe died Monday, March 8, 2010 at Britthaven of NorthChase in Wilmington.

He was born July 18, 1916 in Pender County, the son of the late John Thomas and Bertha Horrell DeVane. Lovingly remembered are his wife of 63 years, Janie Smith DeVane who died in 2004 and sons, Fredrick DeVane and Charles DeVane.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Mary DeVane of Ivanhoe; grandchildren, Sgt. Andy DeVane and his wife, Brittany, Nolan DeVane and Austin DeVane; and numerous special nieces and nephews.

Mr. DeVane was a long-time, dedicated member of Haw Bluff Baptist Church.

Hayes was a devoted husband and loving daddy and granddaddy. He was a Southern gentleman in every aspect of his life. His greatest joys in life were his family, his church family and his friends. For many years he enjoyed growing a vegetable garden and sharing the fruits of his labor with others. His quiet ways, gentle spirit and steadfast faith will always be remembered.

The family of Hayes DeVane would like to express their sincere gratitude to Mike and Cheryl Squires and their family for their caring, kindness to Hayes for the past many years.

The family will receive friends 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Haw Bluff Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Following the visitation the funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. at Haw Bluff Baptist Church with Pastor Steve Gasque and Pastor Richard Wade officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Austin DeVane, Nolan DeVane, Mike Squires, Sr., John Kelly, Thurston DeVane, and Wayne Dennis. Honorary bearers will be Michael Squires, Jr., Jackson Squires and Jimmy DeVane.
