Colon Johnson Obituary

Colon Kenneth (Ken) Johnson, 75, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2019, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born on March 30, 1943, in Apex, North Carolina to the late Colon and Loretta (Fowler) Johnson.  Ken is survived by his loving wife, Jessie Rogers Johnson, and their three sons, Christopher Kenneth Johnson and wife, Melissa, Timothy Cole Johnson and wife, Audra, and Jesse Cromwell Johnson and wife, Cameron. Ken is also survived by his brother, Phillip, and  six grandchildren, Foster, Evan, Dylan, Ava Grace, Graylyn, and Isla. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Jimmy and David Johnson.

Ken worked for 41 years in the Aircraft and Nuclear divisions at General Electric, where he made many long lasting friendships, and set an amazing example of a true work ethic. Ken also served his community in many ways. He was a former president of Winter Park Optimist Club, a Hanover Seaside Club board member, and chairman of the Board of Deacons at Temple Baptist Church. He volunteered his time with United Way and H.U.G.G.S.

Ken’s passions were his family and friends. In their nearly 55 years of marriage, he and Jessie had an unconditional love for one another. Ken and Jessie’s faith in the Lord provided the foundation for their love and commitment to each other and their family. Ken was a dedicated father to his three sons. He coached their sports teams and never missed any event in which they participated. When one of the grandchildren called, “Papa”, he was always there for them. Ken never met a stranger.  He advised his grandchildren to “make a friend a day”, and lived by that rule himself. He will be truly missed by the many people whose lives he touched throughout his life’s journey.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the many wonderful friends who have offered their love and support during this difficult time. They also wish to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at NHRMC for their exemplary care and support for Ken and his family.

Visitation will be at 2:00PM, followed by a memorial service at 3:00PM, Sunday, January 13, 2019, at Temple Baptist Church. Senior Pastor Dr. Mark Gaskins and Pastor Emeritus Dr. Del Parkerson will officiate.
