He was born on June 1, 1955 in Pender County; the son of the late William Ivey Murray and Evelyn Hester Clark Murray Dail.  He was also predeceased by his wife, Bettie Mae Brinson Murray; brother, Benjamin Franklin Murray; sister, Ella Kay Murray Roberson; stepfather, Grover Cleveland Dail.

John is survived by his sons, Brent Murray of Wallace and Jonathan Murray of Waynesville, NC; grandchildren, Zachary Murray, Tyler Murray, Christian Murray, Ashton Murray, Skyler Murray and Toby Murray; step-grandson, Issac Salzler; brother, William Randall Murray of Wallace; half-sister, Deleane Duff and husband, Terry of Wallace; mother of his sons, Donna Benton of Teachey and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

John was a loving father and caring son, brother and uncle who loved his family dearly.  He was a quite and humble man that tended to his own business and enjoyed life.  John worked with the Town of Wallace for many years before retiring. He enjoyed weed eating, cutting grass and being in God’s beautiful outdoors.  His favorite past time was drinking “Mountain Dew” and watching ball games with his family.  He was an avid Carolina and Green Bay Packer fan.  John was a simple man who was loved by all.  He will surely be missed but treasured memories of him will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew John Alva Murray.
