Obituary

Adrian Philmore "Phil" Horrell, 87, of Atkinson passed peacefully from his earthy life Friday, May 9, 2025 at Novant Health NHRMC in Wilmington.

He was born February 15, 1938 at home in Pender County, the son of Jeff and Hazel Glisson Horrell. In addition to his parents Phil was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Katherine "Katie" Bishop Horrell.

Phil is survived by his sister, Marcia Horrell Scaggs and her husband, Bob; nephews, Kevin Scaggs and wife, Terri and Kyle Scaggs and wife, Toni; grand nephews, Robby Scaggs (Megan), Russell Scaggs (Abby), and Tanner Scaggs (Anna); grand nieces, Stacey Shaw (Andrew) and Sydney Taylor (Ethan); great grand nieces and nephews, Emersyn Shaw, Piper Shaw, Barrett Shaw, and Hayden Scaggs; and many loyal friends.

Phil graduated from Atkinson High School in 1957 and attended Campbell College. He served his country honorably in the US Army. After many years of service in the maintenance department Phil retired from Federal Paper Company. He was a member of Atkinson Baptist Church and often attended Caswell Presbyterian Church.

For many years Phil was a parttime farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shrimping, and time that he and Katie spent at their campground home in Surf City. Phil was a man of integrity and a loyal friend. His friendly smile and chuckle will long be remembered.

The graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2025 at Woodcock Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Martha Highsmith conducting the service. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

To Phil's many friends and the entire community Marcia and family would like to thank you for every kindness shown to Phil…daily care, assistance with his bookkeeping, housekeeping, food, prayers, visits, and genuine expressions of concern.  We thank God, our Heavenly Father, for the gift of friends and pray His eternal blessings to all.
