Obituary

Albert Hill Pridgen, Jr. died on May 2, 2012 at Pender Memorial Hospital. He was born July 9, 1918 in Atkinson, NC. He built a home on his family's farm in the 1950's and continued to live there the remainder of his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, Albert Hill and Sarah Bailey Henry Pridgen; his first wife, Mary Frances Cooper Pridgen; second wife, Janie Marshburn Pridgen; a daughter, Sue Pridgen Futrell; five older sisters, Thelma, Maggie, Marie, Mamie, and Mildred.

A. H. is survived by three daughters; Pamela Ford and husband, Phillip of Raleigh, Lynn Lowder of Atkinson and Robin Howell and husband, John of Albermarle, stepson, Charlie Marshburn and wife, Jane of Harrells; his nine grandchildren; Chris Ford and wife, Kristie of Raleigh, Ashley Teeter and husband, Brett of Wilmington, Cary Ford and wife, Jennifer of Wilmington, Allison Wall and husband, Ryan of Raleigh, Sherry Horrell and husband, Ricky of Atkinson, Ray Futrell and wife, Michelle of Willard, Gabe Lowder, Clint Lowder, and Johnny Howell all of Albermarle, step-grandchildren, Bailey Wilkes, Katie Wilkes and Jeff Marshburn all of Harrells; ten great grandchildren, Ethan Horrell of Atkinson, Ryan, Zachery and Jack Teeter all of Wilmington, Wyatt and Sarah Ford, Graham and Garrett Wall all of Raleigh, Amelia and Lucy Ford of Wilmington.

A.H. was a veteran of World War II where he served as Corpsman in the US Navy. He began employment with the Pender County Soil Conservation Service in 1946 where he worked for 30 years. He raised tobacco, corn, soybeans, and strawberries on his farm. He was the oldest living member and deacon of Atkinson Baptist Church, a member of Atkinson Lodge No. 612 A.F. & A.M. and Atkinson Ruritan Club. A. H. loved to fish Black River for shad and fry them for his family and friends to enjoy. He also loved deer hunting with Atkinson Hunting Club. Western movies and Wild West stories were favorite pastimes for A. H. Fond memories of A. H. will forever remain in the hearts of family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel, 308 w. Fremont St., Burgaw, NC, with Pastor Steve Gasque officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401, New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation for Pender Memorial Hospital Employee Benevolent Fund, 2259 S 17th St., Wilmington, NC 28401 or to Atkinson Baptist Church, PO Box 368, Atkinson, NC 28421.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at Pender Memorial Hospital for the love and care they provided. They are also grateful to Carrie Mae Wallace for being such a caring "best friend" to their dad for the past three years. Special thanks to Alice Munn and Sam Newkirk for nighttime care.
