Obituary

Alfred Donald Lanier, Sr., 89, of Burgaw passed from his earthly life on Friday, March 8, 2013 at Pender Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born September 17, 1923 in Pender County, the son of John Edward and Libby McKoy Lanier. In Addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his sons, Alfred Donald Lanier, Jr. and infant Kelly Lanier; brothers, Ray Lanier and Tracy Lanier; and sister, Dorothy Panciero.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Carolyn H. Lanier; sons, Michael Lanier (LeAnn) of Wilmington, Jeffrey Lanier (Beth) of Wilmington, Wayne Lanier (Becky) of Burgaw, Gregory D. Lanier (Yvonne) of Rocky Point, Charles Lanier (Allison) of Dickinson, TX, Greg A. Lanier (Avery) of Burgaw, and Billy Franklin (Lois) Jacksonville; daughters, Wanda Morgan (Gary) of Burgaw, Gretchen Brock (Marty) of Willard, Dawn Henry of Burgaw, and Shirley Ottaway of Sneads Ferry; sister-in-law, Bettye C. Lanier of Burgaw; 30 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; and numerous extended family.

He served his country honorably in the US Army during WW II. Donald was a retired building contractor and a Pender County farmer.

Donald was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather, brother and friend. He loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing and gardening. He set an excellent example in life for his children and taught them many things ... how to work, how to laugh and how to get along with people. Amongst the many legacies Donald will leave are the importance of God, family and country.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home with the Rev. William Hill Pearsall, the Rev. Jim Newkirk and Chaplain Parthena Skipper officiating. Burial will follow in Burgaw Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Richard Whitley, C. J. Henry, Alfred Franklin, Eddie Barnhill, Jae Lanier and Gary "Chip" Moore. Honorary bearers will be Stanley Harper, Jim Turner and Charles Futrell.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial gifts may be given to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Pender Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for all their excellent care, concern and compassion during the years of Donald's illness.
