Alice Cornelia Squires Johnson, 86, of Atkinson, passed gently from her earthly life to her eternal rest on May 16, 2016 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
She was born on November 25, 1929 in Kelly, the second of four daughters born to Zannie and Fannie Mae Brown Squires. Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Lee Roy Johnson; and sisters, Edna Ceruzzi and Roma Lee Kelly.
Alice is survived by her children, Nancy Applewhite (Wayne) and Roy Johnson (Gay), all of Atkinson; grandchildren, Wendy Applewhite, Bryan Applewhite and Jared Johnson (Ivy); great grandchildren, Justin Henry (Ginger), Hope Fussell, Taylor Applewhite and Shelby Applewhite; one great great grandchild, Skylar Henry; sister, Lucille Bramble; special sister-in-law, Kay Jordan (John), special niece, Brenda Ceruzzi (Tommy); nephew, Louis Ceruzzi and many additional nieces, nephews and friends.
Alice was a faithful member of Atkinson Baptist Church where she was actively involved until her health prevented her attendance. Her faith in God and her Christian beliefs were very evident by the life she lived.
Alice attended East Carolina University and she furthered her education by obtaining a degree in Histology. Her work career involved working in the Histology Department of the lab at James Walker Hospital and New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where she was head of the Histology Department for many years.
Alice, in her sweet, caring, gentle, and humble way made many friends through the years. She was a wonderful homemaker. Alice will always be remembered for her love and devotion as a wife, mother, and grandmother. Next to God, her family was the focal point of her life.
The family will receive friends 12 noon at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel on Thursday, May 19, 2016 with service beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Kenneth Smith will conduct the service. At other times the family will be at the home of Roy and Gay Johnson in Atkinson.
Burial will follow in Woodcock Cemetery, Atkinson
