Obituary

Anna Williams Matthews Johnson, age 95, of Rose Hill, North Carolina died Friday, September 18, 2009 at Brian Center of Wallace.

Mrs. Johnson was born April 15, 1914 in Rose Hill and was the daughter of the late Loula Parker Matthews and Willie James Matthews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Ray Johnson, three sisters, Ruby M. Wells, Lucille M. Waller, Ivy M. Mallard and one brother, Luther James Matthews.

Surviving are two daughters, Anna Rae Johnson Murray of Rose Hill and Brenda Johnson Hightower of Mobile, Alabama and one son, Joseph D. Johnson of Surf City, North Carolina; grandchildren, Laura M. Case, Llew Ann M. King and husband, Matt, Caroline M. McMahon and husband, Tim, Elwyn Grey Murray, III and wife, Wendy, Samuel Power and wife, Joyce Ann, Anna Marie P. Chapman and husband, Jeff, Jodi Johnson Mews and husband, Jeff and Jeremy Johnson and wife, Tandee; seventeen great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Mrs. Johnson was a life-long member of Corinth Baptist Church where she served in many areas of ministry such as Sunday School teacher, piano player, choir director and on the building committee for the existing brick church. She was a woman of uncommon character, beauty and grace, "an instrument of God's love on this earth." Anna was a friend to all, a strong yet gentle and loving presence to all who were blessed to know her.

The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday, September 20, 2009 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Wallace, NC and other times friends are welcome to visit with the family at the home of Anna Rae Murray.

Graveside funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday, September 21, 2009 at Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Wallace with the Rev Richard J. Phillips officiating.

Memorials may be given to Corinth Baptist Church, 1107 Cornwallis Rd., Rose Hill, NC 28458 or to Rosemary Rest Home, PO Box 928, Rose Hill, NC 28458.
