Arthur Hargett Porter, Sr., age 87, of Sebring, Florida and formerly of Kelly, North Carolina, died Friday, September 26, 2008 at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Sebring, Florida.

He was born in Kelly, North Carolina and was the son of the late Edd and Lillie Holmes Porter.

Mr. Porter served his country honorably in the US Navy during WW II. He was a member of Lake Josephine Baptist Church in Sebring and a former member of Centerville Baptist Church in Kelly.

Surviving are his wife of fifty-seven years, Demearl Cottle Porter; son, Arthur H. Porter, Jr.; daughters, Brenda Lee and Gloria Schmitten; grandchildren, Jennifer Foerman, Jamie Yawn, Robbie Lee, Julie Nevils, Robert Erik Salmon, Jana Huntley, and A. J. Porter; eight great grandchildren; sister, Kathleen VanPelt; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kelly, North Carolina with The Rev. Jack Miller officiating. Military honors will be accorded by US Navy Honor Guard.
