Obituary

Betty Jean Owen Suther, 89, of Wilmington, North Carolina, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 30, 2026.


She was born on June 8, 1936, in Mebane, North Carolina, to the late Dewey Albert Owen and the late Mary Ellen Patton Owen.


Betty was an outgoing person with a vibrant personality, joyful spirit and a faithful servant of the Lord.  She loved sharing her God given talented voice through singing, bringing the joy of the Lord to many people throughout her life. At a young age she was part of the Owen Sisters Trio gospel group which was broadcasted on the radio. She was always in the church choir, singing in rest homes and later in life sang in the Belle Tone and Sweet Adeline groups.  She also shared her love for people by earning her RN degree spending most of her working career as a home health nurse.


Betty loved spending time with family and friends.  Many cherished memories were made while raising 4 children, one year apart, with her husband, Tom. There were lots of family camping trips traveling all over the United States. Betty loved her horses, dogs and especially her cats. She joyfully hosted many family reunions. Betty was a great dancer and loved ballroom dancing.


Betty is survived by her sons, Tom Cornelius Suther, III and wife, Anne, David Albert Suther, Sr., and wife, Cherie, Wade Morris Suther and wife, Angela; her daughter, Linda Jean Williford and husband, Arthur; her sister, Ellen Wilson; her grandchildren, Molly Saunders, Adam Suther, David Suther, Jr. and wife Charlotte, Katie Suther, Faith Suther, Hope Suther, Arthur M. Williford, Hannah MacNish and her husband, Ryon,; 8 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.


In addition to her parents, Betty was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Thomas Cornelius Suther, Jr., her sisters, Dewey Jones, Shirley Hull; and her brother, Donald Owen.


Her celebration of life will be held at Jackson Springs Presbyterian church at a date to be announced.
