Charles Darrell
Matthews
Nov 29, 1954 — Apr 19, 2017
Charles Darrell Matthews, age 62, of Wallace left this earthly life for his eternal rest.
He was born November 29, 1954 in Duplin County and was the son of Melva Jones Matthews of Wallace and the late Charles B. Matthews.
Surviving in addition to his devoted mother, is his loving daughters, Melisa Matthews Giacoman and husband, Kraig and Melinda Matthews Lippard and husband Jacob, all of Burgaw; grandchildren, Collin Chase Robbins, Davis Layton Robbins, Alexis Suzanna Robbins, Mary Catherine Lippard, Madeline Brittian Lippard and Caroline Lane Lippard; sisters, Shirley James and husband, Johnny of Surf City, Cynthia Merritt and husband, Glenn of Watha and Patricia Wells and husband, Barry of Willard; his canine companion, "Mister" and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Darrell was a thoughtful and caring man who loved his family dearly. He found great joy in the simplest things, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his girls. His grandchildren enjoyed calling him "Grindaddy" and they brought him much pride. Being an avid outdoorsman, Darrell loved the beach, fishing, hunting and just being outside enjoying God's nature with "Mister". He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and his favorite driver, Jimmy Johnson. When he wasn't watching racing, Darrell found hours of entertainment by watching westerns and reruns of 'Bonanza'. With his witty personality, Darrell was a joy to be around. He loved a joke. Sitting around, with RedMan in his cheek, retelling countless stories of pranks he had played on loved ones was a pure pleasure for him. Darrell was thoughtful of others and a caring son who loved his mother deeply. Darrell "Capt'n D" will surely be missed but treasured memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
