Obituary

Charles Harris Smith, 90, of Sarasota and formerly of Brighton, Michigan passed away in Wilmington, North Carolina after a short illness Feb. 19, 2014.

Born May 17, 1923 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, he was the son of Beatrice (Hyne) and Sydney Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of the Brighton High School class of 1942, serving for three years after that in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a member of the ground support corps of the Flying Tigers led by Gen. Claire I. Chennault, stationed primarily in Kweilin, China. After his discharge, Mr. Smith worked for thirty years for the Buick division of General Motors at G.M.'s Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan. Following his retirement, Mr. Smith and his wife, Margaret, moved to Siesta Key where Mr. Smith's mother's family were early winter residents, settling north of Turtle Beach on Siesta Key at the turn of the twentieth century. He was a member of Pine Shores Presbyterian Church

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William, and two sisters, Ruth Weber and Doris Case.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Margaret Nadal Smith of Sarasota; a daughter, Kweilin Nadal-Smith Belitsos and her husband, James Louis Belitsos, of Royal Oak, Michigan; a nephew Edmund Case of Ellicott City, Maryland; two nieces Carolyn E. Weber of Sarasota and Ann Case Baker of Pearland, Texas; great nephew Tom Baker of Pearland, Texas and extended family member Paul W. Weber of Sarasota.

The family wishes to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice of Wilmington, North Carolina for its outstanding level of care and compassion during Mr. Smith's illness.

Memorial donations may be made to Pine Shores Presbyterian Church of Sarasota or Lower Cape Fear Hospice of Wilmington, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held in Sarasota at a future date.
Mr. Smith was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Dr. El N. Clark of Wilmington.
