Obituary

Chester Ray Hunter, Sr., 80, of Wallace left this life for his eternal rest on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Born on September 5, 1933 in Onslow County, Chester was the son of the late Liston Edward Hunter and Bessie Padrick Hunter Norris. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Roger, Elmer and Robert Hunter.

Chester served his country honorably in the US Army during the Korea Conflict. He was a 50 year member of the VFW and was retired after being employed with JP Stevens for 26 years.

Surviving is his loving wife of 58 years, Gaynell Mobley Hunter, his children, Chester "Ray" Hunter, Jr. of Wallace, Edward "Eddie" Hunter (Laura) of Burgaw, Gregory "Greg" Hunter (Joann) of Watha, Vanessa H. "Sissy" Spearman (David) of Teachey and Chris Hunter of Wallace; grandchildren, Sam Hunter, Shayna Brock (Justin), Scott Hunter, Braxton Spearman, Brandon Mathis and Katelyn, Brianna and Michael; brother, Nelson Hunter (DeLois) of Castle Hayne; sister, Ruth Ezzell of Garner, sister-in-law, Arlene Hunter of Scottsdale, AZ; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and his canine companion, "Jemma".

Chester was a devoted husband and loving daddy, granddaddy, brother and friend. He found great joy in the simplest things, but his greatest joy was his family, especially his daughter, "Sissy". His grandchildren were also the light of his life and enjoyed every minute he spent with them. Chester loved to garden and sharing the fruits of his labor with others. He enjoyed being with his friends at the VFW and playing BINGO. With a big heart, Chester would give the shirt off his back if needed and always ready to lend a helpin
