Clarence Sloan Baker, 87, of Atkinson passed peacefully from his earthly life on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born October 2, 1926 in Tallahassee, FL, the son of the late Julius Bingham and Naomi Barnhill Baker. Also remembered is his beloved wife, Maria Staudinger Baker who died in 2008.
Clarence is survived by his sons, Roy Baker (Linda) of Council Grove, KS and Charlie Baker (Becky) of Atkinson; daughters, Betti Edwards (Billy) of Atkinson and Maria Lewis (Larry) of Burgaw; grandchildren, Jason Baker (Jennifer), Bethany Carlson (Eric), Hans Edwards (Jennifer), Matthew Edwards (Shannon), Lisa Chambers, Stacie Smith (Shawn), Austin Baker (Mandy), Karin Porter (Brett), Michael Conway (Libby), Brian Lewis (DeAnn), and Adam Lewis; 19 great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Barrow, Grace Malpass, Joan Moses, and Sandy Horrell (Jimmy); and many nieces and nephews.
Clarence served his country honorably in the US Army during WW II. He was a member of Atkinson Baptist Church. For many years Clarence delivered oil, gas and fuel for E & B Oil Company and also was a Pender County farmer.
Clarence was an honorable man of outstanding character who loved his family dearly and was a devoted husband, daddy, "Opa", brother and friend. He was a diligent worker and a man of his word. His ready smile, gentle manner and warm heart will long be remembered and treasured by family and friends.
Memorial service will be at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with the Rev. Merrell McKoy officiating. Following the service the family will receive friends at the funeral home until 8:00 p.m. and at other times the family will be at the home of Betti and Billy Edwards.
Private family graveside service will be on Wednesday at Woodcock Cemetery.
