Obituary

Claude McRoney "Mack" Atkinson, 86, of Burgaw passed peacefully from his earthly life Thursday, February 3, 2022 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 25, 1935 in Sampson County, the second of fourteen children of  James B. Atkinson and Geneva Earl Blackburn Atkinson. In addition to his parents Mack was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Eury; and brothers, Dawsey, Durwin, Robert, Allen, Harry and Cecil Atkinson.

Mack is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Erma H. Atkinson; children, Arlan Atkinson (Rebecca), Ellen Miller (Russ), Susan Hunter (Edward), Cynthia Rivenbark (Jason), Dereta Atkinson, Lester Grant, Ginny Gentry (Ken), John Dombroski, and Kristin Dombroski; 22 grandchildren, including Elizabeth Atkinson, who lived in the home with Mack and Erma; 31 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; sisters, Nancy Whaley, Jean Atkinson, and Rosa Pierce (Charles); brothers, Lars Atkinson (Wanda), Lawrence Atkinson (Debbie), Vinnie Atkinson, and Donald Atkinson; sister-in-law, Gracie Atkinson; many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Not to be forgotten are Mack's canine companions, Oreo River and Ariel Daisy.

Mack was an excellent worker and had several careers which encompassed many years. First, New Hanover County Animal Control, second, Dino De Laurentiis Studios in Wilmington and last employment was with American Skin in Burgaw, retiring in 2009.

He was a faithful member of Jordan's Chapel United Methodist Church.

Mack was a good neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand where ever he was needed. Being a wise man with a caring manner, Mack would listen to your problems and help you find a solution. Each year Mack enjoyed growing a garden and sharing his vegetables. Mack loved the Lord, his family, family gathering and bluegrass music. Mack's presence in our family circle will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Jordan's Chapel United Methodist Church, 4670 Stag Park Road, Burgaw with funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Reverend Lenier Furr will conduct the service.

Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.
