Daniel Wayne Schaeffer, 55, of Wilmington, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington after a brief illness due small cell lung carcinoma.
Dan is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Nancy Clarkson Jewell and his two very best childhood friends Matt Mason and Jeremy.
Dan is survived by his loving family including his father Roger Schaeffer (Billie); his sister, Jody Schaeffer Batson (Lealon); his son Mason Schaeffer (Carolyn); his treasured grandson, Finnick Fletcher Schaeffer; his niece Jenna Davis Graves (Perris); his nephew Justin Davis (Angel); his step siblings Travis, Angie, Madonna; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Dan found his peace at the beach, where he spent most of his time enjoying the ocean, sun and serenity. Growing up he loved playing baseball, going to the racetrack with his father, riding his BMX bike and hanging out with his neighborhood friends. He had a kind wisdom about him. In his early adult years, he enjoyed racing cars at Coastal Plains Racetrack with his father, as he grew up at Holly Ridge watching his dad race his GTO. Dan had a special love for dogs, especially Doberman pinchers. He had a competitive soul and sharp mind, whether he was playing pool or contemplating his next chess move. He loved a challenge.
Though his time with us was too short, the memories he leaves behind will last a lifetime in our hearts. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
