David Hughes
Griffin, Jr.
Feb 9, 1942 — Mar 23, 2020
David Hughes Griffin, Jr., 78, of Coppell, TX and formerly of Nashville, NC passed away on Monday, March 23, 2020.
He was born February 9, 1942 in Rocky Mount, NC; the son of the late David Hughes Griffin and Margie Guill Griffin.
David was a graduate of Nashville High School, where he was a football player. Upon graduation he attended NC State University and later graduated from NC Wesleyan College with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Prior to graduating, David joined the US Army and served as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist. He trained in Huntsville, AL and Albuquerque, NM before being stationed in Muenster, Germany for the duration of his service. Upon completing his military service, David returned to finish his degree in 1970. After graduation, David worked as a chemist at Burroughs Wellcome and transitioned to working in quality control at Abbott Laboratories. His career took him to Texas in 1980, where he worked for Halliburton Energy Services as a quality control specialist. Before his retirement, he worked as a computer consultant for the Today Foundation. He loved woodworking, classic movies, hot dogs and NC barbeque, and he always had a cat as a companion.
David is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Griffin Acosta and husband, Carlos of Van Nuys, CA; granddaughter, Samantha; brother, Ruffin Griffin and wife, Pam of Nashville, NC; sister, Cindy Griffin Wyatt and husband, Dickie of Raleigh, NC; longtime companion and special friend, Fran Sauls of Carrollton, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
David's family and friends often called him "Rock". He was tough as a rock and a very hard worker. He always took great pride in his work and his family. While his health permitted, David would journey back to Nashville to visit. He always looked forward to Christmas gatherings and summer get-togethers. With a great big heart, David truly loved his family, his cats, and his friends. But most of all, David loved his Lord and Savior. David will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him.
There will be a memorial service later in Nashville, NC.
