Obituary

David Arthur Lucas, 83, of Willard, North Carolina left this earthly life for his eternal rest on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

He was born on July 1, 1942, in Darlington County, South Carolina to the late Arthur Taylor and Amie Hall Lucas. David was also preceded in death by his first wife Dollie Howard Lucas and his son-in-law Chuck Coates.

David proudly served his country in the US Army.  He was employed with Carolina Power and Light Company for 32 years as a lineman.  He was a long-time member of Poston Baptist Church but for several years he attended Awaken Church. David also served as a Gideon for many years.

Surviving to cherish his memory is his best friend and wife of 34 years Gayle Batts Lucas; his sons David Arthur Lucas, Jr. and wife Lee Ann of Burgaw, NC and Ernest Joseph Lucas of Beaufort, NC; his daughter Cynthia Lucas Coates of Creedmoor, NC; grandchildren Journey Chandler and husband Kyle Gray, Jeffery Lucas Chandler, Jesse Lucas and Jennifer, Seth Coates, Cori Melton, Tess Melton, Kala Melton; great grandchildren Traylan Thorpe, Ivory Nash and Adonis Bullard Lee; siblings Virginia Murray of Wallace, Betty Culbreth of Magnolia, Judy Bellamy of Supply, Joyce Rackley of Willard, Donald Lucas of Forest City, NC; Jerry Lucas of Rock Hill, SC and Robert Lucas and wife Rhonda of  Reidsville, NC, honorary grandson Johnathon Orr, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

David was a loving husband and caring father, Paw-Paw, brother and friend.  He was a good hearted and kind man who loved his family dearly.  David enjoyed hiking, fishing, hunting and working on old cars.  He was a jack of all trades. There was nothing that David could not do.   Most of all, David loved everybody and everybody loved him.  He had a heart of gold and loved being a husband, a "Paw-Paw" and  "Uncle David".

He looked forward every year spending time with the close-knit group of men he worked with at CP&L at the Outer Banks.  David loved to travel and has visited every state in the United States and many places around the world.  He loved missions and was a true servant of God.  David traveled to Alaska, Cuba and El Salvador on mission trips where he acquired many friends. He served one week a month for one year in Mississippi during the Hurricane Katrina Relief. David hiked over 500 miles of the Appalachian Trail. He also traveled to Oregon and hiked part of the Pacific Crest with his son, David Jr.  David loved the Lord and is now receiving his rewards that he laid up in Heaven all these years.  He will surely be missed but will never be forgotten.
