Donald Eugene "Gene" Byrd, age 59, a greatly loved dad, granddaddy, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend passed from his earthly life, Friday, August 16, 2024, at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Donald Eugene Byrd (Gene) was born on November 19th,1964, and is preceded by his mother, Bertha Mae Denitson; his father, James Liston Byrd; and his brother-in-law, Mark Westbrook. He is survived by his children, Donald Byrd (Tiffany) and his daughter, Christina Spivey (Jason). His grandchildren Joshua Byrd, Jenna and Jaelyn Spivey. His brothers, John Byrd (Beth) and James Byrd; his sisters, Barbara Batson (Pedro) and Camie Westbrook along with his best friends and cousins, Dale (Rocio) and Kenneth (Dawn) Bollinger.

Gene made an honest living as a heavy equipment mechanic, during his time off he was an avid outdoorsman. While fishing he was fortunate enough to win several trophies over the years in the many tournaments that he would say he "donated" to.  He loved spending time with his family and friends, often spending that time reminiscing and talking about the many adventures he had over the years, with a few "Dag On's" added in here and there.  Gene was always there for anyone, even if they didn't ask.  But most importantly his kids and grandkids were the proudest and greatest accomplishment of his life. Nothing made him happier than spending time with them. He was the proudest Daddy and Pop Pop to his son, daughter, grandson, and granddaughters.

To best honor his wishes, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
