Donald Eugene Hollis, 75, of Atkinson passed from his earthly life to his eternal rest on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at his home with family by his side.

He was born January 16, 1936 in Wilmington, the son of the late William John Hollis, Sr. and Anne Smith Hollis.

Donald is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Hilda Watson Hollis; daughters, Deborah Thompson of Sulphur, Louisiana, Susan Willis (David) of Baytown, Texas, Donna O'Quinn of Sulphur, Louisiana, Sally Harper (Jen) of Portland, Texas, Latisha Rich (Ron) of Currie, Benita Cleveland of Atkinson and Amanda Crawford (Greg) of New Bern; 18 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brother, W. J. Hollis (Martha) of Wilmington; sisters, Marcia Hollis of Raleigh; two nieces; two nephews; one great niece and one great nephew.

Mr. Hollis served his country honorably in the US Army National Guard and was retired from Corning, Inc.

Donald loved his family with all his heart. As a young boy he grew up on Masonboro Sound, learning to fish and harvest oysters which he continued to enjoy all of his life. He loved the outdoors, driving his tractor and making a garden as long as his health permitted. He loved his dog, country music, jokes and laughter, but above all he cherished and honored his family.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with the Rev. Elbert Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow in Hollis-Anderson Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. until hour of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
