Obituary

Doris Cotty Briley died peacefully at home on March 19, 2022 with her loving family by her side. Doris was born on November 17, 1949, in Wilmington, Delaware, to the late Percy & Jane Cotty. She was the only daughter among 5 siblings and was preceded in death by her parents and eldest brother, Jim (& JoAnn) Cotty of Atlanta, Georgia.

She moved to Kinston, NC at 3 years old, where she made lifelong friends, including meeting her husband of nearly 49 years, Clinton A. Briley, Jr. Doris attended Salem College and later transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill, where she earned a degree in mathematics. After her graduation, she spent a brief period in Boston, Massachusetts before returning to Chapel Hill to marry, work at Investor's Title Company, and start a family. Once her husband, Clint, completed medical training, they moved to Charleston, WV to raise their two girls. They returned to North Carolina in 1995, building their forever home in Wilmington, NC.

Doris was recognized for her exquisite quilting and knitting. She was an avid golfer with 5 holes-in-one, loved cheering on the Tarheels, and spoiling her grandchildren. She used her talents to provide quilts to the neonatal unit at New Hanover hospital. She was a natural leader and showed this as she served as Treasurer of the Junior League of Charleston and organized the Charleston Symphony Ball. She was also very active at the Landfall Country Club especially with the Ladies' Golf Association.

Doris is survived by her husband, Clinton A. Briley, Jr; daughters, Jennifer Briley Christian (Robert) of Chapel Hill and Laura Dennison Briley (Blake Price) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Emmet Christian, Olivia Christian, and Joshua Price; brothers, John Cotty, David Cotty and Richard Cotty, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10AM on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Wrightsville United Methodist Church with Minister David Haley officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the Dye Clubhouse within Landfall Country Club at 11AM.

The family would like to thank her family physician, Dr. Andre Leonard, the Duke Cancer Center, and the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare for their dedication, compassion, and care during her battle with a rare, aggressive cancer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare at lifecare.org or to a non-profit of your choosing.

Shared memories and condolences may be sent to the family by selecting Tribute Wall above.
