Obituary

Dorman Lowell Mercer, Jr., age 96, a blessed man who shared his blessings freely passed gently from his earthly life Saturday, May 18, 2024 at his home with family at his side.

He was born October 8, 1927 in Brunswick County, the son of Dorman Lowell Mercer and Annie Mae McKeithan Mercer. In addition to his parents Lowell was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Julia Henry Mercer; grandson, James Godbey; and brothers, Jack Mercer and Worth Mercer.

Lowell is survived by his daughters, Cathy Jones and her husband, Allen and Mary Godbey and husband, Keith; grandchildren, Bret Jones (Chelsey) and Jake Jones (Amber); great grandchildren, Kylie Jones, Miles Jones, Audrey Jones and Parker Rudisill; special niece, Nancy Baker; special nephew, Charles Stellar; and many extended family and  friends. Not to be forgotten is Lucy, his four-legged companion.

He graduated from Bolivia High School and continued his education at NC State University receiving an undergraduate degree and a master's degree. He began his teaching career at Long Creek Grady School and ended his 42 year career in education at Burgaw High School as assistant superintendent of Vocational Education for Pender County School System.

As a young man in addition to his educational career, Lowell served in the US Air Force Reserves.

Lowell enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and fishing. The best part of fishing was the fun and fellowship enjoyed at fish frys, eating the catch of the day.

Lowell was loved by family and friends and will truly be missed.

A graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at Riley's Creek Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Josh Lee  conducting the service. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

A special thanks to Sylvania Bordeaux, Connie Murphy, Diane Holmes, and Terryl Simpson who provided loving care for Lowell allowing him to stay at home where he was happiest.
