Dorothy Bell Miller, 93, a resident of Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, NC and former resident of Kinston, N.C., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 3, 2013.
She was born on November 27, 1919, in Currie, N.C., the daughter of Herbert Patterson Bell, Sr., and Anna Pearl Teague Bell. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, David Edward Miller, Sr. and her three siblings, Betty Ann Johnston, Mack Lloyd Bell, Sr., and H. P. Bell, Jr.
Dot graduated as valedictorian of her high school class at Long Creek-Grady High School in Rocky Point, N.C. and four years later in 1940 graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C. Later she earned a Masters of Arts in Education from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.
She taught school for 37 years in North Carolina, including but not limited to Kinston, Atkinson and Long Creek. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational sorority, in which she served as treasurer for many years. A long-time member of First Baptist Church in Kinston, she taught the Carrie Mae Marston Sunday School Class and played the piano for them. It was a joy for her to serve this class and she cherished her many friends at First Baptist.
After retiring, Dot attended weekly quilting classes at Lenoir County Community College in Kinston, N.C. She lovingly shared her talents and beautiful, handmade quilts with others. She constantly made potholders, party mix and chicken soup for family and friends.
But more than anything, she loved God and her immediate and extended family. She served all of them well.
Remaining family includes her daughter, Gaye Benson and husband William Atkinson Benson, Sr., of Richardson, Texas and son, Dr. David Edward Miller, Jr., and wife, Nancy of Clemmons, N.C. Grandchildren include the following; William A. Benson, Jr., and wife, Katie of Cypress, TX, David Edward Miller, III, Esq. and wife, Jacqueline of Durham, NC; Adam Swaim Miller of Winston-Salem, NC, Evan Stephen Miller of Clemmons, NC, Nathan Thomas Miller of Clemmons, NC and Carolyn Leigh Miller of Clemmons, NC. Great-grandchildren include Jordan, Anna and Audrey Benson of Cypress, TX and David Edward Miller, IV of Durham, NC.
The funeral service will be held at Moore's Creek Baptist Church in Currie, N.C. on Monday, January 7 with The Reverend Dr. Chuck Towery and The Reverend Phillip G. Eakins officiating. The church will be open at twelve o'clock for viewing and the service will be at one o'clock to celebrate her life. Visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall following the burial in Moores Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Casket bearers are David E. Miller III, Adam Miller, Evan Miller Nathan Miller, William A. Benson, Jr., Clark Helton, and Chuck Helton.
