Dorothy Malpass Verzaal, age 71, of Rocky Point passed gently from her earthly life to her eternal rest Saturday, September 4, 2010 at her residence surrounded by her beloved family.

She was born March 14, 1939 in Pender County and was the daughter of Rudolph Clinton and Dixie Howard Malpass. Also remembered are her husband, John Verzaal, Jr.; sister, Elizabeth Moore and brother, Rudolph "Sambo" Malpass.

Surviving are her children, Mark Baldree of Sparta, Michelle Hitt (Gary) and Tiffany Batson (Tommy) all of Rocky Point; grandchildren, Brandon Callahan and Brice Baldree both of Wilmington, Ashley Hitt, Brooke Hitt, Katelyn Batson and Jacob Batson all of Rocky Point; and brother, Eugene Malpass of Currie.

Dorothy was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints-Hampstead Ward. For many years Dorothy with her husband, John, owned and operated John Verzaal's Florist in Wilmington.

Above all Dot cherished her family and was the best Mama, Mama Dot and sister anyone could ask for. Her faith, her smile, caring ways and laughter will be missed and always treasured.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel. Burial will follow in Malpass Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw and at other times will be at the home of Michelle and Gary Hitt.

Remembering how much Dot loved and cared for animals the family suggests memorial gifts may be given to Pender County Humane Society, PO Box 626, Burgaw NC 28425.
