Obituary

Dr. George Otto Wells, Jr., age 69, of Burgaw died unexpectedly Friday, June 29, 2012 at his farm and hunting camp near Atkinson, a place he loved and spent many happy days.

He was born August 30, 1942 in Wilmington, the son of the late George Otto Wells and Alice Cook Wells.

George is survived by his wife of 45 years, Connie Horrell Wells; daughters, Amy Wells Ramos (Ray) of Atkinson and Rebecca Wells Denson (Travis) of Scotts Hill; grandchildren, Hannah Cavanaugh, Taylor Denson, Aubrey Denson, Courtney Cavanaugh, Donovan Ramos (Alex), Brandon Ramos, and Evan Ramos; sister, Sara Wells of Wilmington; nieces, Alice and Catherine; and special friend, George Highsmith, Jr. who was like a father to him.

Dr. Wells received his Doctorate of Dentistry from the University of NC at Chapel Hill and after graduation he joined the US Army, serving his country honorably during the Vietnam Era. Following the completion of his military service he returned to Burgaw and worked with Dr. Stanley Farrior for a short time before opening his own dental practice in Burgaw where he practiced dentistry for 35 years. He was a member of the American Dental Association and Wilmington Tri-County Dental Society. Near and dear to George were members of Murphy's Crossroads Hunting Club and Board of Directors and staff of Black River Health Services where George had served as chairman of the board. George was a faithful member of Burgaw Baptist Church.

At heart, George was a hunter and fisherman, loving nothing better than a good hunt with Murphy's Crossroads Hunting Club. He enjoyed tending his crops on his farm and eating with the Wednesday night boys. George loved all of God's beautiful nature; he enjoyed being generous and sharing with others; and above all loved his family. Amongst the many legacies George leaves with us are the importance of God, Family, Friends and Country. His memory is blessed and will not be forgotten.
