Edgar Robert Casey III, age 74, of Burgaw passed from his earthy life to his eternal rest on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice LifeCareCenter with family by his side.
He was born March 27, 1937 in Dudley, the son of the late Edgar Robert Casey, Jr. and Julia Mae Potts Casey.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Peggy M. Casey; daughter, Jo Anne Casey-Summers (Peter) of Burgaw; son, William "Bill" R. Casey of Burgaw; grandchildren, Elizabeth Casey, Sarah Casey-Summers, and Judah Summers; brothers, Farrell Casey of Longs, SC and Leddell Casey (LaVonne) of Burgaw; sister, Nancy Isabella Hough (Mike) of Eden; sister-in-law, Faye M. Hardin (Wilford) of Elizabethtown; brother-in-law, Howard F. McCall (Frances) of Angier; nieces, Michelle McCaleb (Anthony), Barbara C. Medlin (Anthony), Mia Price (Sam), and Renee` Summerlin (Robin); nephews, Casey Hough (Brooke), Wilt Hardin (Tracey), David McCall (Belinda), and Randy McCall (Barbara); seven great nieces; four great nephews; and ten special Casey cousins.
Robert was a faithful member of Burgaw United Methodist Church where he served the Lord and his church in many capacities through the years. Robert served his country honorably in the US Army and Army Reserves. In 1973 Robert was elected to the Burgaw Town Board of Commissioners where he was appointed chairman of the Finance Committee and in 1975 he served as Burgaw Mayor Pro Tem. Robert was a true asset to the town and always wanted what was in the best interest of the citizens. For 31 years Robert gave of his time and energy as a volunteer in the Burgaw Fire Department, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He was instrumental in getting scanners so that firemen would have a faster response time. Robert was a life member of Burgaw Lion's Club where he helped to make a difference in the lives of many visually impaired people, young and old. He was a talented master craftsman in building cupolas. For 43 years he was employed in the lumber and building supplies business.
Robert was a man who loved his Lord, his family and his community, giving generously to all. Robert's family is grateful to God for his life and for your kindness, friendship and prayers.
Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2011 at Burgaw United Methodist Church with The Rev. Laura Mitchell and The Rev. Bobby Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Burgaw Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Bill George, Charles Rooks, Andy Paluck, Charles White, and Wayne Briley. Honorary bearers will be Rev. Travis Owen, Vance Weibley, Cliff Moore, Billy Ruddell, Leon Corbett and members of Burgaw Lion's Club.
The family will receive friends 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all medical staff who lovingly cared for Robert for the past four years.
