Elwood Mills, 86, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare in Wilmington surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on April 11, 1940, in Tabor City, North Carolina to the late Lila (Hinson) Mills and the late Wilson H. Mills.

Elwood, an Army National Guard veteran, was an avid golfer who often played at the Wilmington Municipal golf course. He was an active member of Masonboro Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, usher and sign language interpreter. Elwood was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Elwood is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Vickie Lantzy Mills; his son, Charles Steven Carter and wife, Dagnet; his daughters, Tonya Mills Raines, Nicole Mills Ward and husband, Paul; his sister, Geralene Creech and husband, Gene; his grandchildren, Michael David Raines, Alysha Raines, Kirby Carter, Lauren Carter Sullivan and husband, Chris, Emily Carter; his great granddaughter, Lylith Raines; and a host of other family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Elwood's honor to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare or to Masonboro Baptist Church .

A Memorial Service will take place at 11:00am on Saturday June 13, 2026 at Masonboro Baptist Church. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10:00am-11:00am.
