Ernestine Lee, age 95, of Burgaw passed gently from this earth to her eternal rest January 20, 2011 at Milford & Reba Quinn Hospice Care Center with family at her side.
She was born February 14, 1915 in Harnett County, one of seven children of Nathan Young Lee and Estus Eldridge Lee. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Ruby Lee Gurganous and brothers, Colvet, Nathan and Durwood Lee.
Ernestine is survived by her sisters, Helen Lee Mills of Penderlea and Jessie Lee Miller of Greensboro; several nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Lynne M. Jones of Willard and Kathryn M. Roberts of Raleigh; many caring extended family and friends.
Ernestine graduated from Meadow High School in Johnston County and at the age of 28 years she joined the military. Ms. Lee served her country honorably from 1944 to 1966 in the US Navy, serving during WW II and the Korean Conflict, retiring as Chief Petty Officer. She was a member of the Naval Fleet Reserve.
For many years Ernestine was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Arlington, VA.
Ernestine lived a long and full life; believing in and loving family, her country and her fellowman. She was a hard worker, liked everything just so, and had a contagious zeal for life. Her steadfast faith and strength of character carried her through her memorable journey on this earth.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Potts Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4125 NC Hwy 11, Willard, and at other times will be at the home of Helen Mills, 9690 Penderlea Hwy, Willard.
Following the visitation the funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. at Potts Memorial Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Norman Wheeler and C.L.P. Robert S. Swart officiating. Burial will follow in Potts Memorial Church Cemetery with full military honors. Casket bearers will be Britt Jones, Gene Gurganous, Jimmy King, Bradley Roberts, Jerry Mills, Philip Sholar, and Wayne McNeil.
Ernestine's family would like to thank Dr. James McCabe, Dr. Linda Calhoun, Dr. B. Singh, and long time friend and caregiver, Mae Mazyck for their guidance, support and tender care during Ernestine's lengthy illness and passing.
