Estelle Orr
Devane
Oct 7, 1921 — Sep 26, 2013
Estelle Orr DeVane, 91, of the Montague Community in Pender County was granted her angel wings on Thursday, September 26, 2013.
She was born October 7, 1921 in the Montague Community and was the daughter of the late John William "Mr. Billy" Orr, Sr. and Lena Armenta Malpass Orr. Lovingly remembered are Estelle's husband, Stewart DeVane who died in 1998; three brothers, Lawrence Orr, Jr. and wife Thelma, D. B. Orr, and J. W. Orr, Jr. and wife, Mildred; and five sisters, Edith Orr Pope and husband Glenn Curtis Pope, Ruby Orr Price and husband Jack, Ruth Orr, Tresa Mae Orr Barnhill, and Sarah Alice Orr Worthington; brothers-in-law, Hybert DeVane and Bayard DeVane and sister-in-law, Lillian Millar, all who preceded Estelle in death.
Estelle is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Andrew "Andy" J. Simmons, Jr. and Teresa Simmons; grandchildren, Harriet Reeves and husband Robert and Gwendolyn Mantooth; great grandchildren, Talmadge Reeves and Savannah Mantooth; sisters-in-law, Louise Orr, Mary Hutchinson, Hazel Sanders and Julia Raye Newton; brother-in-law, Rupert D. Worthington as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Estelle was raised on a farm and much of her life was spent working with God's bountiful crops such as blueberries. She was a life long member of Myrtle Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church (now New Beginnings Community Church of Montague).
Not only was Estelle a beloved wife and wonderful mother, but a generous friend to all who knew her. Estelle was a dedicated homemaker: a master of biscuits, skilled in making quilts, produced a beautiful vegetable garden, and created a home filled with love. Her Christian faith carried her through life and especially during this past year as her health declined. Her great sense of humor and wit remained until the very end. Estelle's joy in life will not be forgotten.
Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 20123 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with the Rev. Charles Tatum officiating. Burial and committal service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2013 at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home until hour of the service.
A special thank you to Lower Cape Fear Hospice nurses and to Estelle's caregivers for the excellent care that they gave to Estelle.
