Esten "Jonnie" Johnson Gillis, age 88, of Shallotte left this life for her eternal rest on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Autumn Care of Shallotte.
Born on June 20, 1923 in Duplin County, she was the daughter of the late John Perry and Alice Rouse Johnson. She was also predeceased by her husband, William A. Gillis; sister, Grace J. Gagne; brother, John E. Johnson and nephew, Perry Lee Johnson.
"Jonnie" as she was affectionately called, attended Bible Baptist Church of Supply where they made her a part of their church family. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church.
Surviving are her brother, Edward J. Johnson and wife, Bettie of Surf City, step daughters, Elisa and Adonna; nieces, Regina Johnson Jenkins, Jane Broughton and Susan Johnson and great nephews and great nieces.
Graveside funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday, September 19, 2011 at Wilmington National Cemetery.
Jonnie served as a registered nurse for over 30 years. During those years she traveled to several states as she compassionately served others. Jonnie loved her family and her church family dearly and was always there for them as her health permitted. She enjoyed art and pottery, but her favorite pastime was playing Bingo. Cherished memories of Jonnie will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Jonnie's family would like to especially thank Bible Baptist Church of Supply for prayers, many visits and love they showed to her. They would also like to sincerely say "Thank you" to the staff at Autumn Care of Shallotte for the compassionate love and care they gave to Jonnie.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to Bible Baptist Church of Supply, 2428 Seashore Road SW, Supply, NC 28462 or Trinity United Methodist Church, 209 E. Nash Street, Southport, NC 28461 or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, "Brunswick House", 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
