Etta Mae Sherrod, 87, of Leland, NC passed away on Wednesday, May 20th, 2026, at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on September 22nd, 1938, in Bladen County, NC to the late Roland Lewis Russ and the late Anna Neal Hester.
Etta served as the Bus Coordinator at Emsley A. Laney High School for many years and with the New Hanover County school system for over 36 years. She was especially known for her thoughtful cards and the kindness she shared with others. Etta was a wonderful cook, a master gardener, and a talented seamstress. She was an accomplished church pianist for over 50 years, playing for Wilmington First Church of the Nazarene.
Etta is survived by her children, Roxanna Wilson, Victoria Hoover (David), Carl T. Davis, Jr., Charles L. Davis (Allison); her brother, John R. Russ (Sherri); her brother in law, David Squires; her sister, Peggy Worrel; her grandchildren, April Joy Rhodes (Bradley), William Wilson, Joshua Hoover (Chris), Rachel Smith (Scott), Benjamin Hoover (Katelyn), Jonathan C. Davis (Alicia), Hope T. Davis; her great- grandchildren, Brittan Horrell (Jordan), Tristen Horrell, Camberly Scott (Samuel), Daylon Horrell, Makenly Horrell, Everly Rhodes, Davis Rhodes, Cameron "Cam" Davis, Taylor Smith, Lawson Hoover, William "Liam" Hoover ; her great- great grandchildren, James Michael Horrell, Kyland Horrell, Easton Scott, Kolsen Scott.
In addition to her parents, Etta is preceded in death by Carl T. Davis, Sr., Elmer R. Coates; her sister, Annette Squires; and her brother-in-law, James Worrel.
Her Funeral Service will take place at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, May 26th, 2026, at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home in Wilmington, NC with Reverend Danny Goddard and Pastor Derrell Clark officiating. Burial will take place after the service at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kelly, NC. The family will receive friends and visitors 2 hours prior to the service, from 11am – 1pm at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home in Wilmington, NC.
