Evelyn "Evie" Fischer Downing, age 77, of Atkinson passed peacefully from her earthly life to her eternal rest on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at her home.

She was born February 11, 1935 in Alexandria, Virginia and was the daughter of Evelyn Midkiff Fischer of Atkinson and the late Henry Thomas Fischer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Talmadge Downing; son, Joseph Dean Downing; sisters, Susan "Sue" Marie Phipps, Joyce Ann Fischer and Rita Elaine Fischer.

In addition to her mother Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Vicki O'Bannion (Jerry) and Mary "Twink" Capps (Raymond); sons, Terry Downing and David Downing (Tina); eight grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one great great granddaughter; brother-in-law, Walter Phipps and many good neighbors and friends.

Evelyn graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Evelyn was a member of United Faith Fellowship and attended when her health permitted.

Evelyn was a devoted wife and a loving mother, sister and friend. Her grandchildren affectionately called her "Mammaw Evie". She found great joy in the simplest things, but her greatest joy was family. Evie was a lover of all of God's beautiful nature and creatures. With her warm heart and gentle spirit she was a good neighbor and friend. She will be remembered for her generous nature, her love for family and friends and her steadfast faith in God.

Funeral service will be at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at United Faith Fellowship Church with Pastor Don Yerby and Pastor Merrell McKoy, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Atkinson Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Rick Maynard, David Downing, Daniel Downing, Walter Phipps, Brent Downing, and Terry Downing.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home and at other times at Evelyn's home.
