Obituary

Flonnie Best Hood, age 95, of Burgaw died peacefully on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Pender Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 22, 1914 in Wayne County to Benjamin and Florence Underwood Best. Also remembered is her devoted husband, Gurney Hood.

Surviving are her loving family: her daughters, Dorothy Hood Mills (James David) of Burgaw and Florence Hood Strickland (Gaylee) of Sunset Beach; son, Gurney T. Hood (Jane Fiery) both of Kure Beach; grandchildren, Beverly Hood Gyllenhaal (Anders), James David Mills III (Mechelle), Louanne Mills Bisel (Fred), Susan P. Falls, Steven Parker, Robert Gurney Hood (Mary), Mary Winifred Schwaner (Jeff), Abby Harden (Johnny), Mark Strickland (Tammy) and Lee Strickland; and thirteen great grandchildren.

Mrs. Hood was a longtime, devoted member of Burgaw Presbyterian Church.

Flonnie, a true Southern lady and a wonderful homemaker was the finest wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor anyone could ask for. She loved her family with all her heart; always caring, sharing and cooking - being noted for her famous pound cakes. Flonnie was filled with grace, kindness and thoughtfulness for others. Her love of flowers and nature was revealed by her beautiful yard and many flowers. Flonnie's family is grateful to God for her life and for every kindness, your friendship and especially for your prayers.

On Tuesday, March 23, 2010 from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of Burgaw Presbyterian Church. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in Burgaw Presbyterian Church Sanctuary with The Rev. Dr. Ray Mendenhall officiating.

Burial will follow in Burgaw Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Johnny Smith, Harold Pollock, Russell Lewis, Billy Murphy, Jimmy Bell, and Bob Hudson. Honorary bearers will be Jennings Humphrey, Dr. Stanley Farrior, Hugh Pate, Rick Biberstein, Anthony Best and Archie Wood.

The family suggests that memorial gifts may be given to Burgaw Presbyterian Church, PO Box 565, Burgaw, NC 28425.
