Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gene Timothy Atkinson, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, who passed away on November 21, 2024.

A man of remarkable strength and grace, Gene survived a diving accident in his youth which left him paralyzed.  Gene, with the help of his family and dear friends, found a way to overcome these new challenges and make the most of the years ahead of him.  Gene operated Atkinson Farm Supply in Currie for over 20 years, becoming a trusted friend and confidant to all who walked through the doors.  He spent his life helping others, sharing his wisdom and knowledge around the farm, at the store, or with his nieces and nephews.

Even after facing the challenge of a life with paralysis, Gene maintained courage, choosing to find joy in each day. He taught us all that we could rise above any hardship, and that with a spirit of gratitude, life can be very full.

His love for his family, his friends, and life never wavered. He was a living testament to the power of perseverance and kindness, always willing to help others.

Gene is preceded in death by his father and mother, Hugh and Hilda Atkinson, and niece, Stephanie Sharp.  He is survived by his brothers, Hugh Atkinson, Jr. (Jackie) and Willie Atkinson (Gayle); sister, Donna Sharp (David); his nieces and nephews, Melissa Baird (Jones), Katie Schira (Nick), Ashley Siever (Mike), Joseph Atkinson, Megan Johnston (Brandon), Alison Atkinson, and Jonathan Atkinson (Catrina), as well as many great nieces and nephews, who will miss him deeply but will carry forward the lessons he taught them: the importance of patience and perspective, and the gift of a kind and giving heart.

A visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 12:00 pm at Long Creek Baptist Church with the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Brad Thurston will conduct the service. The burial will follow in Malpass Memorial Cemetery at Long Creek Baptist Church.

Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate his life, as we reflect on the memories of a man had unshakable faith in the beauty of each new day.

Shared memories and condolences may be sent to the family by selecting Tribute Wall.
