George Edwin Hawes, Sr, age 88, of Rose Hill, North Carolina passed from this earthly life to his eternal rest on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
He was born in Duplin County on January 13, 1938, to the late William Brantley and Linda Carr Hawes. George was also preceded in death by his beloved first wife and mother of his children Betty Lou Hall Hawes; stepson William Hines Quinn, Jr. and sister Anna Lee Earnhart.
George proudly served in the National Guard for many years. He was a lifelong member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 38 years Sylvia Wiggins Hawes of the home; his sons George Edwin Hawes, Jr. and wife Katrina and their children Amanda Hawes and Alexander “Alex” Hawes, of Rose Hill, William David Hawes and wife Amanda and their son Brantley Hawes, of Rose Hill and Richard Glenn Hawes and wife Cindy and their sons Maddox Hawes and Mason Hawes of Hampstead and William “Will” Quinn of Kenansville; sister Lois Wellons of New Bern; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that loved George dearly.
George was a devoted husband and caring father, grandfather and brother. He was a private man who worked hard and was a great provider for his family. With a big heart and gentle spirit, George never met a stranger and was one to help anyone in need. He was frugal yet generous to those who needed a helping hand. George loved to tell stories or share quotes with others. He was always testing you by answering a question with a question. He was funny and could always make you laugh. His keen sense of humor and charitable spirit helped him cultivate enduring friendships that sustained him through the dark days of his illness. George leaves behind many in his community - family, friends, neighbors, that are blessed to have known him and been a part of his life. He will surely be missed but never forgotten.
Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Wallace Chapel with Reverend Ross Cavenaugh officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, one hour prior to the funeral service at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home.
There will be a private family burial at Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Edwin Hawes, David Hawes, Richard Hawes, Bobby Ward, Clint Blanton and Bob Miller.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Genesis Church, 110 S. Sycamore Street, Rose Hill, NC in memory of George Hawes, Sr.
