Obituary

George "Pete" William Hanchey, age 96, of Wallace passed from this earthly life to his eternal rest on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

He was born on July 4, 1926, in Duplin County and was the son of the late Tate William and Idawese Boney Hanchey.  Mr. Hanchey was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Evelyn Brown Hanchey; his daughter Brenda Sholar; and sisters, Doris Carter and Minnie Larson.

Surviving are his two daughters, Barbara "Bobbie" McKellar and Celia Horne, both of Wallace; grandchildren are Tonia Arndt, Vonnie England, Victoria O'Neil and Charles Newman; sister Ann Larson of Kentucky; numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that loved Mr. Hanchey dearly.

Mr. Pete, as he was affectionately known, was a painter by trade and after retiring he and Evelyn opened/operated a vegetable and fruit stand outside of Wallace for 9 years and in Surf City for 5 years.  At these stands you could always depend on fresh and great-tasting fruits and vegetables plus great conversations.  Mr. Pete was a people's person and never met a stranger.  He always had a joyful spirit about him and was full of love and life. He loved to hunt, fish and being outside in God's beautiful sunshine.  Most of all, Mr. Pete loved his family with all his heart.  He was a loving father and caring grandfather, brother, and friend. His 'girls' was the light of his life and he was always there for them.  Mr. Pete will surely be missed but treasured memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
