Gladys DeVane Thompson, 94, of Roanoke, VA and formerly of Watha passed away Monday, October 11, 2010 in Roanoke, Virginia.
A graduate of James Walker Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Gladys pursued a nursing career until she retired in 1977 from Pender Memorial Hospital. She was a life-long member of Watha Baptist Church.
Gladys was a giving, sharing, caring Southern lady who loved her family dearly. Being a good neighbor and friend she was loved by all who knew her. In years past she enjoyed gardening, both flowers and vegetables, was a fabulous cook and always enjoyed a good southern meal. Gladys will be remembered for her delightful personality and her strong Christian faith. Cherished memories of Gladys will always remain in our hearts.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Wreather DeVane; husband, J. D. Thompson and four brothers. She is survived by her children, Judith Anne (Ron) Robey of Bedford, VA, Robert William (Phyllis) Blake of Wilmington and Lucy DeVane (Ken) Mundy of Roanoke, VA; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Hyacinth Futrelle of Wilmington and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be 11:00 am on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Riverview Memorial Park with The Rev. Robert E. Thompson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be given to Cave Spring Rescue Squad, PO Box 20181, Roanoke, VA 24018.
