Gurtha Mae Squires Smith, 71, of Kelly passed gently from her earthy life Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at her home surrounded with love by her family.
She was born March 11, 1949 in Bladen county to William Gladys Squires and Vada Bigford Squires. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Windell Squires and sister, Evelyn S. Carroll.
Gurtha is survived by her children, Julie S. Patrick and husband, Barry of Bolton, Tony E. Smith of Riegelwood, and Karen S. Pipkin of Wilmington; grandchildren, Michael, Jessica, Magen, Jesse and Morgan; great grandchildren, Isabella, Joshua and Jae; brothers, William Charles "Tump" Squires and Elmer "Tink" Squires and wife, Donna both of Kelly; former spouse and dear friend, George E. "Buddy" Smith of Bolton; and many nieces and nephews.
She attended Atkinson High School. Gurtha was a member of Union Grove PFWB Church.
Gurtha was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who loved her family and never met a stranger. Her kindness, good heart and sweet spirit are a lasting legacy that will continue among those who knew her best.
A graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Natmoore Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Bryan Blackwell officiating. Casketbearers will be nephews. Due to Covid 19 it is requested that you wear a mask.
