Obituary

Harley Angus Phillips, Jr., 75, of Carolina Beach, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on May 14, 1951, in Wilmington, to the late Harley Angus Phillips and the late Beth Middleton Phillips and was raised in Wallace, NC.

Angus was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family deeply. He cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and took great joy in watching them grow. His family was the center of his world, and he would do anything for the people he loved. He was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back and never think twice about it.

Angus loved being outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing. In his younger years, he also enjoyed coaching his daughters and many other young ladies in softball, sharing his love of the game and the lessons that came with it. As the years went by, he found happiness in the simple things—being outside, riding his tractor, spending time with family, and making memories with the people he loved. He will be remembered for his generous heart, his love for his family, and the many ways he made those around him feel cared for. His presence will be deeply missed, but his love and the memories he created will remain with his family forever.

Angus is survived by his wife, Rebecca Hooper Phillips; his daughters, McKenzie Phillips Brummond and husband, Tyler, Mallory Phillips Smith and husband, Travis; his grandchildren, Fuller Jackson, Campbell Jackson, Grady Smith, Harley Sutton Smith, Samuel Brummond, Madelyn Brummond; his 2 brothers; and many other family members and friends.

A private celebration of life will be held by the family. Details will be announced by the family at a later date.
