Harriet Agnesa Rood, 81, of Wilmington, went to her heavenly home on September 27, 2018 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.
She was born to the late Kai and Mary (Formwalt) deVermond on January 9, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois.
Mrs. Rood was the devoted wife to a career Marine, and loving mother to four sons and a daughter. While raising her children, frequently moving between residences in North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland, she was nonetheless able to further her own education, achieving BS and MS degrees in Librarian Science from East Carolina University.
Mrs. Rood applied her degree serving eagerly as the librarian at Farmville Elementary School in Farmville, NC. She also took her librarian skills to the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas for ten years, 1994-2004, where she helped to mold young men at the college preparatory school.
Harriet Rood was a member of Azalea Dog Training Club. She and her 7-year-old Sheltie, Cameron, competed on the master level in AKC agility trials. She also loved the Washington Redskins, and Nationals, and her alma mater the ECU Pirates.
Left to remember her are her husband, John C. Rood, Jr.; her sons, John A. Rood, Dennis K. Rood and his wife Lorri, David C. Rood, and Rob R. Rood and his wife Lydia; her daughter, Mary C. Rood; her 18 grandchildren; and her 6 great grandchildren.
Her funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Monday, October 1, 2018, at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington with Rev. Richard Aylor officiating. Burial will follow at the Coastal Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
