Herbert "Ray"
Loftis
Feb 6, 1950 — Jan 8, 2023
Herbert "Ray" Loftis, age 72, of Wilmington, NC passed away after a nine year-long battle with cancer on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at his home in Wilmington, NC.
He was born on February 6th, 1950, in Richmond, VA to the late Herbert Cornelius Loftis and Pauline Loftis Dodgens.
Ray was a superintendent for 36 years at Diamond Shamrock/Occidental Chemical/Elementis Chromium. He also worked at Pender Correctional Institution in Burgaw for 8 years. When Ray was younger, he liked to hunt and fish. Later, he enjoyed boating, riding motorcycles with his wife, grilling, and hosting gatherings for family and friends. He had a great sense of humor, a positive attitude, and he never met a stranger. Ray loved his family very much, including his grandchildren who he never failed to brag on. He loved spoiling them with Britt's donuts and his special pancakes. Above all, Ray loved, cherished, and was thankful for his wife, Susie, who was his soul mate and best friend. They both felt God brought them together and they were both blessed to find true love. They had known each other since sixth grade.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Susie (Pierce) Loftis; his son, Herbert "Bert" Loftis, Jr. (Joanna); his daughter, Carmela Loftis Meeks; his brothers, Jimmy Loftis (Pam) and Darrell Dodgens (Sara); and grandchildren, Adam Crawford, Shae Crawford, Ariel Loftis, Ella Loftis, and Kayla Loftis.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home, 315 Willow Woods Drive, Wilmington, with Bishop Linwood Nesbitt and Apostle Anthony Richburg officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Per Ray's wishes, a celebration of life party will continue after the visitation at Ray's home at 915 Radnor Road, Wilmington, NC 28409.
Charitable contributions in memory of Ray may be made to any of the following: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org, Tunnels to Towers Foundation at t2t.org, or Shriners Hospitals for Children at lovetotherescue.org.
