Obituary

Horace F. "Sambo" Hanchey, Sr., age 89, of Wallace died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Milford & Reba Quinn Hospice Care Center.

Born July 11, 1921 in Duplin County, he was the son of the late Collie Fitzhugh and Dollie Rouse Hanchey. He was predeceased by his brothers, Rodney L. Hanchey and Ray H. Hanchey and sisters, Lorea H. Toler, Eloise H. Eagle, Jean E. Hanchey and Frankie H. Cavenaugh.

Mr. Hanchey served his country honorably in the US Navy during WWII. He was a farmer for over 55 years and a member of Bethel Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are his loving wife of 64 years, Christine Whaley Hanchey of the home; his children, Connie H. Boone and husband, Ronnie of Wallace, Bo Hanchey and wife, Linda of Bath, Johnny Hanchey and wife, Pat of Wallace, Sandra H. Cavenaugh and husband, Sammy of Wallace and Dana Hanchey of Wallace; grandchildren, Tina B. Nester and husband, Craig, Hollie B. Humphreys and husband, Chris, Margie H. Raynor and husband, Robert, Hugh Hanchey and wife, Abbie, Fayth H. Herring and husband, Chris, Alanna H. Moore and husband, David, Vada Cavanaugh and Austin Cavanaugh; 9 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Peggy L. Hanchey and Mary B. Hanchey; brother-in-law, David A. Whaley, Jr.; special friends, Lucy Orengia, Joy Whaley, Edith Sykes and Nada Maysonet and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 6:00 pm Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Wallace Chapel with the Rev. Tim Mateer officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service until 8:00 pm on Wednesday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Wallace.

Sambo was a devoted husband and caring father and grandfather. He was a simple man who was loved and respected by all who knew him. Being a hard worker and good provider, Sambo was dedicated to taking care of his family. Cherished memories will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial gifts be sent to Bethel Wesleyan Church, 2635 S. NC Hwy 11, Rose Hill. NC 28458 or to Milford & Reba Quinn Hospice Care Center, Carolina East Hospice Care Center 748 S. Kenansville By-Pass, Kenansville, NC 28349.
