Obituary

Howard Leroy Barrett, Sr., 73, of the Shiloh Community of Watha passed from his earthly life to his eternal rest on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

He was born March 21, 1940 in Wolf Summit, West Virginia. Howard was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Barrett Tate and sister, Connie Sprouse.

Bud leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Mavis Newton Barrett; son, Howard Barrett, Jr.; daughters, Karen Barrett Vernon (Jesse) and Jane Newton Marshburn (Charlie); grandchildren, April Vernon, Amy Vernon, Bailey Wilkes, Katie Wilkes, Jeff Marshburn, and Howard "Tripp" Barrett III; great grandson, Martin Perez; sisters, Phyllis Ledbetter, Teresa Guerrero, Dottie Carlson, Dorcas "Cookie" Weaver, and Sharon Locklear; brother, Eddie Holliday; and many nieces and nephews.

Bud as he was known by family and friends grew up in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He served his country honorably in the US Marine Corps, stationed mostly in Camp LeJeune at Jacksonville. He and his family settled in the Shiloh Community of Pender County, where he worked for Barnhill Construction for many years. Later in life he was self-employed in the trucking business. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Bud loved his family and was a great husband, daddy, granddaddy, brother and friend. He was a good neighbor and most important to him were God, Family and Country. Bud's life was blessed and his memory cherished.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with the Rev. Tony Fontana officiating. Burial will follow in Peterson Family Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Charlie Marshburn, Jesse Vernon, Jeff Marshburn, Steve Newton, Tom Jefferies and Tremain Newton.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the Barrett residence.
