Iris Brown Savage, age 88, of Wallace, died Friday, November 11, 2011 at her residence.
Born in rural Duplin County, August 27, 1923, as the second eldest daughter of Fennell Brown and Rillie Williams Brown, Iris completed her education at Rose Hill High School, graduating in 1940. She married James Alfred Savage of the Chicken Neck community outside of Wallace and side-by-side they farmed many years raising hogs, tobacco, and numerous other crops. Later in life, she provided care and companionship for various "senior citizens". Iris was a member of Corinth Baptist Church, Teachey, NC.
In addition to her parents, Iris was predeceased by her husband, James Alfred Savage and sisters, Madeline Vann and Doris Frederick. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Ann Poole O'Donnell and husband, Pat of Ivanhoe and her son, Ronald Eugene Poole of Teachey; grandson, Dean Butts and his wife, Kim of Wallace and granddaughter, Sharon Poole of Teachey; great grandchildren, April and Nicolas Butts of Wallace and step grandson, Shawn O'Donnell of Wilmington. Survivors also include her sisters, Agnes Zapulla and Edna Adkins, both of Virginia, Thelma Jones of Rose Hill and Dorothy Powell of Rocky Point; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Iris' family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. Richard Recko and Dr. David Weatherford and their staff, along with the caring staff of Carolina East Home Care and Hospice, especially Janet Mobley; and caregivers Nadine Sloan, Andreal "Cookie" Hendrick, Joyce Swinson and Elaine Colonna, for all the care and compassion given to Iris during her illness.
There will be a graveside service at 11:00 am on Monday, November 14, 2011 at Rockfish Memorial Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Simon Scott and the Reverend Myra Heath. The family will receive friends at Mrs. Savage's residence.
Iris' family request that memorials be made to Carolina East Home Care and Hospice, PO Box 887, Kenansville, NC 28349.
