He was born July 1, 1935 in Duplin County, the son of the late Walter James and Lillie Mae Bowen Blanton. He was also predeceased by his son, Jimmy Blanton and sister, Judy Blanton Chestnutt.
James Earl proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was active in the US National Guard for 5 years and served in the army for 3 years. He loved his country and was proud to be an American.
