Obituary

James Elliot Henry, 91, of Kelly, NC died March 2, 2015 peacefully at his home. He was born September 8, 1923 to the late Roland Kerr Henry and Ruby Porter Henry of Kelly, NC. His beloved wife, Doris Green Henry preceded him in death in 2004.

He is survived by three children, James Elliott Henry Jr (Jim) and wife Gail, Susan Elizabeth Henry, and Ellen Henry Edmunds and husband John, six grandchildren, Carrie Henry Leffingwell, Robin Henry Willis, James Andrew Henry, Anna Layne Henry, John Page Edmunds Jr. (Jack), Elizabeth Prescott Edmunds, two step-grandchildren, Kevin Carr Sapp and Ethan Michaels Sapp. He is also survived by a great granddaughter Kathryn Lucille Willis (Lucy), and a sister, Linda Henry Robins and husband William of Wilmington, NC. A sister, Wilma Jean Henry also preceded Elliot in death.

Elliot loved his farm and his lifelong community of Kelly. He enjoyed people, and always was happiest when friends joined him at the farm for the "2 cent tour", a horse ride or a race on the 4-wheelers. He was a leader and a pioneer to a lot of vital services in the Bladen county area. He served over 35 years on Star Telephone Membership's board of directors, and was its Chairman for 7 years before his retirement in 2000. He was an early board member and later served as Chairman of the Black River Health Center in Atkinson. Elliot was a founding member and director of the White Oak-Buckle drainage district board and the Lyon Swamp Drainage District. He also served as a member and as chairman of the Board of Education for Bladen County. He was a member of the Harrells Christian Academy board of directors and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Centerville Baptist Church.

The family will be receiving visitors at Quinn-McGowan funeral home in Burgaw from 6 to 8pm on Tuesday March 3rd and funeral service will be at Centerville Baptist Church on Wednesday March 4th at 3pm. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories in Kelly, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Kelly Historical Society, PO Box 66, Kelly, NC, 28448 or a charity or organization of your choice.



The family will be receiving visitors at Quinn-McGowan funeral home in Burgaw from 6 to 8pm on Tuesday March 3rd and Funeral services will be at Centerville Baptist Church on Wednesday March 4th at 3pm. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories in Kelly, NC.
