James Carr "J.C." Merritt, age 86, of Wallace passed away Friday, October 26, 2012 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, NC.
He was born August 2, 1926 in Duplin County, the son of the late Willie Gregory and Margaret Ann Teachey Merritt. He was also predeceased by his wife, Adell Norris Merritt; daughter, Brenda M. Sholar; grandson, Harry Rouse Sholar, Jr.and brothers and sisters, Gartha Merritt, Myrtle Teachey, Bertis Merritt, Willard "Shorty" Merritt, Wilma Futrell, Marion Weaver and Bennie Merritt.
Mr. Merritt served his country honorably in the US Coast Guard during WWII and was later employed with J.P. Stevens Textile Plant until his retirement. Having a green thumb, he enjoyed being outside in God's wonderful outdoors planting flowers and gardening. J.C. will be missed but memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Surviving is his devoted daughter, Terry Fussell and husband, Reid "R.E." of Rose Hill; grandchildren, R.E. Fussell III and wife, Maria, John Fussell and wife, Crystal and Carol Sholar; great grandchildren, Savanah Fussell, Reid Fussell IV, Tyler Fussell and Madison Fussell; sister, Martha Teachey of Wallace and special friend, Naomi Garvey of Wallace.
Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 29, 2012 at Riverview Memorial Park in Watha with the Reverend Jim Reed officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5:00pm to 6:30pm Sunday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Wallace.
In lieu of flowers the family request that you send memorial gifts in memory of J.C. to the charity of your choice.
