James Edward Wirtz, 88, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2026, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare in Wilmington.

He was born on July 10, 1937, in Pittsboro, North Carolina, to the late Joseph Bernard Wirtz and the late Mary Burns Wirtz.

James served his country honorably in the US Army.

Before entering the U.S. Army, James attended college in Wilmington. After his military service, he returned to Wilmington with wife, Barbara. He especially enjoyed fishing on the river and spending time in the outdoors.

James is survived by his children, Lynn Sullivan (David), James Wirtz II; his grandchildren, John Christopher Brown, Jr., Alayna Rose Fleming, Tristen Kathleen Fleming, Kensley Grace Fleming; and his sister, Jo Serbiak (Bob).

In addition to his parents, James was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Barbara Gean Stallings Wirtz.
