James Bryan Wooten, age 90 of Maple Hill passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at his home.
He was born January 7, 1917 in Pender County and was the son of the late Ivy Thomas and Marena Lanier Wooten. He was also predeceased by sisters, Vera Wooten and Nina W. Huffman and brothers, Raymond, Clayton, Cecil, Nolan, Franklin and Marvin Wooten.
Mr. Wooten attended New Hanover High School and graduated in 1938 from Wake Forest College which is now Wake Forest University. During WW II James served his country honorably in the US Army. For forty-three years he was a rural mail carrier with the US Postal Service in Maple Hill and was presented the Million Miles Safety Award. He took pride in knowing everyone on his mail route. He was a long time, faithful member of Maple Hill Presbyterian Church where he had served as a deacon.
Surviving are his loving family; his devoted wife of sixty-one years, Edith Parker Hadnott Wooten of the home; daughters, Suzanne Wooten Beverage of Maple Hill and Deborah Faye Wooten of Cary; son and daughter-in-law, James F. "Jim" and Cheryl Wooten of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jason Todd Wooten and wife, Mandy and Melissa Wooten McGahey and husband, Mike; great grandchildren, James Todd Wooten, Ashlyn and Kathryn McGahey; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with Pastor Richard Wurtzel officiating.
Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.
Casketbearers will be Jason Wooten, Mike McGahey, Leonard Pickett, Dennis Wooten, Bertice Lanier and LeGrand Lanier.
Honorary bearers will be Bill Marshburn, Jerry Wooten, Leamon Wooten, David Hewett, Kenneth Lanier, Jr., Jimmy Sholar, Harold Motley, Tommie Crenshaw, Julian Wooten, and Lester Small.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw.
Memorial gifts may be given to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter, 725-A Wellington Ave., Wilmington, NC 28401 or Maple Hill Presbyterian Church, C/O William Marshburn, 14171 NC Hwy 53 East, Maple Hill, NC 28454.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Leonard Pickett for the dedicated and excellent care that he gave to James.
